Vista RC1 x64: First Impressions

Well I'm now 10 hours into my experiment running the x64 edition of Windows Vista RC1.  I am running it on my main laptop which I use for day to day use and development (brave, I know) and that consists of a Acer Ferrari 4005 which contains 2GB of RAM and an AMD Turion ML-37 processor.  Oh, and my new 80GB 7200rpm hard drive (a great buy, I must say).

In the main, I'm very pleased and there is no real show stopper to report.  All hardware (and I mean all) was installed for me by the time I first booted up, which was a pleasant surprise, and it all appears to be working fine.

There really doesn't seem to be any difference to the x86 version I was running previously (build 5536) although I have noticed 3 Outlook 2007 crashed in the first couple of hours as well as one Media Player crash.  It's too early to make a statement on if this is a problem of just a coincidence.

More news soon as it happens.

I'm not using x64, due to my TV card not being supported  with x64 drivers, x86 on the other hand, works :-), It's all good tho, there's alot of bug fixes, and alot less crashes with this version :-)

Only problem I had was a lock up last night when I installed the Nvidia drivers for my 7900gt.  They are the 64 bit RC1 drivers that I need but they froze the computer up.  Secondly I installed them again this morning and no lock up, but there isn't a NV logo in the task bar and nothing seems to have changed...oh well. Any one else done anything with Nvidia drivers?

Vista x64 RC2 build 5744 installed just fine on my Acer Aspire 5102WLMI.  It's the AMD Turion X2 TL-50 processor, 120Gb HD and 1Gb unit.  I upped the RAM to 2Gb before the install, but the rest is the same.  The ONLY device that doesn't work natively is the built-in webcam, manufactured by Bison.

Not really a surprise, since that is also the ONLY device that I could not get to work under XP Pro x64 either.  Seeing as I'm not much of a webcam user, I won't lose any sleep over it.  ;)

Other than that, I can say that it loads faster than XP Pro x64, and the factory-installed XP Pro Media Center Edition (32-bit) even with the 2Gb of RAM.

Now, if only I could find that elusive USB to Serial driver for x64...
